Editing
Vox is a 10,000-circulation metropolitan magazine operated by students in the University of Missouri School of Journalism. I spent Fall 2012 working as the deputy editor of the magazine. My duties included guiding a staff of eight editors and nine contributing writers through the brainstorming and development of the weekly cover feature, lead weekly meetings, and assign stories. There would be four feature stories in various stages of progress each week. I edited copy and worked closely with our photo, design and multimedia departments to ensure the look was as good as the text. Ultimately, I was in charge of making the final call on what stayed and what got cut. At left are a few of my favorites, two of which won SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards.
Page design
During the summer of 2012, I served as a graduate teaching assistant at the Columbia Missourian newspaper. In addition to coaching writers and editing stories, I launched content to the Web, operated the department's social media websites, and designed pages for print. At left are samples of pages that I designed for the sports cover.
